The Airbus A380 is a double-decker airliner manufactured by the European consortium Airbus S.A.S. First flown on 27th April 2005, the A380 was developed in response to the growing problems of airport congestion and air traffic control systems struggling to cope wit h the number of aircraft in operation. Dubbed as the Superjumbo, the A380 has now replaced the 747 as the world’s largest commercial airliner.
Despite its large size, the A380 adopts a conventional airliner design having a cylindrical fuselage slightly wider than that of the 747. Additionally, the overall footprint of the aircraft enables the A380 to be compatible with most existing ramps and runways at major airports.
The initial model being marketed by Aibus is the A380-800 passenger model featuring a spacious cabin in a standard three-class configuration, and offer seating for up to 555 passengers. In a full economy-class configuration. this number is increased to as many as 853. Additional extended range, passenger/cargo, and stretched models are also being developed as growth variants.
